Hey Friend, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet.
If you’ve been around here for a minute, you know I spend a good chunk of my day surrounded by feathers, feed buckets, and the constant background commentary of twenty opinionated chickens. And as funny as it sounds, those little feathered ladies have taught me more about God than I ever expected.
Life on a homestead has a way of turning ordinary moments into parables. Jesus did it with mustard seeds and sparrows. I guess I’m doing it with chickens.
So here are a few lessons God has whispered to me through the coop.
🥚 1. They remind me that God provides what we need, daily.
Every morning, without fail, my chickens greet me like I’m the bearer of all blessings. They don’t worry about tomorrow’s feed. They don’t stress about next week’s weather. They simply trust that when the sun rises, provision will come.
It’s a living picture of Matthew 6:26
“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.”
If God cares for them, these silly, fluffy, easily-distracted creatures how much more does He care for us?
🐓 2. They wander off… and He calls us back.
Chickens have one brain cell, and they take turns using it.
They wander. They get stuck behind things. They forget where the coop door is even though it hasn’t moved in years.
And yet, when I call them, they come running, not because they’re wise, but because they know my voice.
It reminds me of John 10:27:
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”
If God can guide me with more patience than I guide my flock, then His mercy is deeper than I can fathom.
🌾3. They thrive when they stay close to the source.
When my chickens stay near the coop — where the food, water, shade, and safety are — they flourish.
When they wander too far, they get anxious, hungry, or in trouble.
It’s the same with us.
Psalm 16:11 says:
“In Your presence there is fullness of joy.”
Fullness doesn’t come from striving.
It comes from staying close.
🪺 4. They lay eggs faithfully… even when no one sees.
Chickens don’t lay eggs for applause.
They don’t check Instagram to see if anyone liked their work.
They simply do what they were created to do.
Quietly. Consistently. Faithfully.
It’s a gentle nudge toward Colossians 3:23:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…”
God sees the unseen faithfulness — the laundry, the prayers whispered over sleeping kids, the small obedience's no one else notices.
🐣 5. They remind me that growth takes time.
Baby chicks don’t become hens overnight.
They grow awkwardly, unevenly, and sometimes hilariously.
But they grow.
And so do we.
Philippians 1:6 promises:
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion…”
God isn’t rushed.
He isn’t impatient with our process.
He’s committed to finishing what He started.
🌤️ 6. They trust the hand that feeds them — even when they don’t understand it.
My chickens don’t know why I clean the coop, or why I shoo them away from danger, or why I pick them up when they’d rather run.
But they trust me anyway.
And that’s the heart of Proverbs 3:5–6:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…”
We don’t have to understand everything God is doing to trust that He is good.
🧡 A Final Thought
I never expected chickens to become my little feathered theologians, but here we are.
God speaks through Scripture, yes, but He also speaks through the everyday rhythms of our lives. Through gardens. Through sourdough. Through homestead chaos. And yes… even through chickens.
If we slow down long enough, we’ll hear Him in the clucking and the quiet.
Thanks for sitting with me today, friend.
May your week be full of small lessons, gentle reminders, and the kind of peace that comes from knowing you’re cared for, even more tenderly than my chickens are.
Stay Blessed,
FASP
Side note: The scriptures are shortened in this blog, but I encourage you to read them in full and meditate on God's word for clarification. As always, my mailbox is open.
